Reluctant Reader Book List

Do you have a reluctant reader at home or in your care? There are many reasons why a child may not like to read. To compliment a recent post regarding these reasons SAHLibrarians created this book list as a starting point. Take a look!

The I Survived series by Lauren Tarshis

These historical-based fiction books are the perfect blend for those young readers who love history and nonfiction. While the characters in these books are fictional the events are real.

SAH Librarians recommend partnering these books with a nonfiction book of the event.

Superfudge by Judy Blume

A sequel to the popular book Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, it brings back the popular characters on their new journey to a new city and a new sibling.

Children may see themselves in the characters and want to continue reading the series.

Dear America Series

Another great historical-based fiction series, this time in a journal format. Children will enjoy these shortened "chapters" and watching the time pass in the entries.

These are also based on fictional characters but in events and eras that were real. In the back of each book is a section of what it was really like in the timeline, including photos.

Lost and Found by Andrew Clements

A fun book about twin boys who take turns going to school. This book keeps children on the edge of their seats wanting to know what happens next.

This is also a great family read before bedtime or after dinner.

Sisters by Raina Telgemeier

Raina Telgemeier is the newest favorite and her book Sisters is just one of a handful of fun books.

Not only will children relate to this story but the author's humor will keep them interested and wanting to read more.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series by Jeff Kinney

Probably one of the most popular series, these are always checked out at the Library. Most of this series have higher reading levels but even reluctant readers enjoy them.

IFunny Series by James Patterson

Another fun and popular book series based off of another James Patterson series, Middle School, will captivate any young reader in upper elementary or middle school.

The character wants to be a comedian, regardless of his non-comedic home life.

Who Was/Is Series

The most popular biography series currently out there, these funny cover biographies will make anyone want to take a look at the information inside.

SAH Librarians recommend using a biography book with an accompanying nonfiction book. For instance, Walt Disney biography with maybe a how-to draw book or fairy tales.

The Junkyard Wonders

by Patricia Polacco

This popular picture book can be considered a memoir as it's based off the author's childhood.

Young readers may also see themselves in this book and SAH Librarians would recommend adults reading this book as well.

Here's Hank by Henry Winkler

Henry Winkler may be known to us as Fonzie but his character Hank is relatable to a lot of young readers. Dyslexia plays a prominent part in Hank's stories.

Hank is based off of Henry Winkler's childhood making him have first-hand experience of learning disabilities in school.

Charlotte's Web by E.B. White

Charlotte's Web, and any other book with a movie based off it, is a great lead in to helping young readers learn how to visualize the stories. SAH Librarians recommend watching the movie first, then reading the book. Don't forget to have a discussion on the differences between print and screen, why movies leave out plots, etc.

Watching movies and then reading books is a fun family activity that all ages can participate in.

The Unwanted Series by Lisa McMann

While this book series may look daunting, the young readers may feel as though they are one of the "unwanteds" and feel as though they can connect to the characters in this story.

The story line moves pretty quickly and will capture the attention to those who have a hard time grasping stories behind the words they are reading.

There are many more books and series that your reluctant reader will fall in love with. If you find any you wish to share the SAH Librarians, let us know in the comments below. We would love to share our finds with you.
